Development Through the Lifecycle: The Challenges of Emerging Adulthood

Steve Axelrod has been working on revising, elaborating, and applying clinically Erik Erikson’s seminal work on adult development, leading to his 2024 article in The Psychoanalytic Study of the Child, “Growth in adulthood: A revised psychoanalytic framework for adult development.”
In this presentation, Steve will focus on the challenges of Emerging Adulthood—roughly the twenties—examining how phase-specific developmental dynamics and environmental/cultural factors interact to shape psychic experience at this point in the life cycle. In dialogue with attendees, Steve will explore clinical material, contemporary social trends, and depictions of this period in film, demonstrating how the adult developmental perspective can enhance our individual work with patients.

Steven D. Axelrod, Ph.D.
Dr. Steve Axelrod is a psychoanalyst in independent practice in New York City. He is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, where he is Co-Chair of the Independent Track, working to foster innovation and improve the intellectual experience for all members of the Postdoc community. He is on the board of the Psychotherapy Action Network and is a principal in the Boswell Group of psychodynamic management consultants. Dr. Axelrod is the author of books and articles on adult development, the psychology of work (Work and the Evolving Self (Analytic Press, 1999)), leadership and management, male development, and hospital-based psychiatric treatment. He is the co-editor of Progress in Psychoanalysis: Envisioning the Future of the Profession (Routledge, 2018).
