This is the first workshop of the Adelphi Innovation Center Certificate program: AI Literacy for Higher Education, designed to help participants understand and use artificial intelligence in teaching and research.

We’re excited to announce the Adelphi Innovation Center Certificate program: AI Literacy for Higher Education, consisting of a series of five hour-long workshops offered during the 2026-2027 academic year that will help you understand and use artificial intelligence in your teaching and research. Workshops will be led by Dr. Lee Stemkoski, Director of the Innovation Center and Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science, and will take place in person at the Innovation Center in Swirbul Library.

Workshop #1: The Language of AI: Foundational Literacy

This introductory workshop explores the fundamental concepts, terminology, and historical evolution of artificial intelligence, from its early foundations to contemporary developments. Participants will learn different frameworks for understanding AI, including knowledge-based versus machine-learning approaches and functional categories such as analytic/predictive, generative, and agentic systems. Through accessible examples, the workshop illustrates AI’s diverse capabilities, limitations, applications, and future potential.

Two sessions available:

  • Wednesday, Nov. 11th, 11:00am – 12:00pm
  • Thursday, Nov. 12th, 11:00am – 12:00pm

Future workshops:

  • December 2026: Neural Networks: How AI Systems Learn
  • February 2027: Applications of AI in Academic Disciplines
  • March 2027: Using AI for Research: Methods, Ethics, and Efficiency
  • April 2027: Taking Control of AI: Privacy, Security, and Deployment
