This workshop is part of the Couple Therapy Series.

It explores addiction through a relational and systemic lens, examining how addictive behaviors become woven into the fabric of couple relationships. Substance use can both stabilize and destabilize a relationship – maintaining equilibrium even as it undermines trust, intimacy, communication, and connection. Drawing from systemic, cognitive-behavioral, and other evidence-informed perspectives (including the Invitation To Change model), students will develop a nuanced understanding of addiction within the relational context and learn practical interventions to help couples interrupt destructive patterns, strengthen connection, and support meaningful change.

Instructor

M. Morrissey Rombone, PhD

Dr. Rombone is the Director of the Postgraduate Program in Couples Therapy at the Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies at Adelphi University.

She is a Clinical Psychologist in New York with post-doctoral degrees in couples and marital therapy and forensic psychology.
