When the roof over Adelphi University’s Center for Recreation and Sports (CRS) failed prematurely, leadership faced an unexpected challenge. The original roof manufacturer was no longer in business, leaving the University with an unplanned replacement project. Rather than viewing the incident as a simple setback, facilities management saw a unique opportunity.

Under the leadership of Robert Shipley ’05, assistant vice president for facilities management, the facilities team proposed pairing a mandatory roof replacement in 2022 with a modern solar energy installation.

“We had to replace the roof, so the question became: How do we make the most of that investment?” said Shipley. “Pairing the new roof with solar gave us an opportunity to solve an immediate problem while doing something that will benefit Adelphi for years to come.”

Today, that vision is a reality. A new 295 kW rooftop solar array on the CRS is fully energized and producing clean electricity on the 75-acre Garden City campus.

With this greener approach, Adelphi is also saving green: between $20,000 and $26,000 per year.

In fact, over Adelphi’s 20-year agreement with Greenskies Clean Energy, projected savings come out to approximately $600,000—an astonishing number that easily recovers the capital expense of replacing the roof.

Strategic Partnerships and Financial Savings

Bringing the solar installation to life required careful planning. Adelphi began working with SolarKal, a commercial solar advisory, in 2022 to guide the project through evaluation and competitive procurement. Following the procurement process, the Adelphi University Board of Trustees selected Greenskies to develop, construct, own and operate the system.

The 546-panel array was completed without requiring up-front capital investment from the University for the solar infrastructure itself. Under a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement with Greenskies, Adelphi purchases the electricity generated by the system at a discounted rate compared to standard utility pricing with PSEG Long Island.

“Smart growth and sustainable infrastructure are key priorities for Adelphi University, and this project aligns directly with those goals,” said Carol Ann Boyle, MBA ’17, vice president of campus operations. “Bringing more solar online is a major step toward Adelphi’s cleaner, more sustainable future.”

Installation officially began in July 2025. While physical panel placement was straightforward, the project team faced significant weather delays due to something everyone on campus will remember: one of Long Island’s coldest and snowiest winters in recent memory.

“Projects like this take close coordination from development through construction and interconnection,” noted Carson Mislick, director of project delivery at Greenskies Clean Energy. “We’re proud to have worked alongside Adelphi and SolarKal to bring the project across the finish line.”

Neil Sharma, SolarKal co-founder and chief commercial officer, added, “As a New Yorker with a personal connection to Adelphi, this has always felt like a hometown project to me. After working toward it for years, it’s especially rewarding to see it come to life.”

Expanding a Decades-Long Legacy of Sustainability

The new rooftop array is the latest chapter in Adelphi’s long history of environmental initiatives:

  • 2003: Installed a geothermal heating and cooling system in Residence Hall A, cutting electricity reliance for the facility by approximately 30 percent
  • 2006: Earned recognition during EPA compliance inspections as the only regional educational institution to pass with zero fines or penalties
  • 2011: Commissioned a 50 kW solar installation on the roof of Swirbul Library
  • 2016: Added a 2 MW campus cogeneration plant to improve overall energy efficiency
  • 2025: Regained official arboretum status for green spaces and implemented food waste reduction practices in dining services

These cumulative efforts earned Adelphi a spot in The Princeton Review 2025 Guide to Green Colleges.

Adelphi Campus in the Fall showing Nexus Building and green spaces.

Adelphi’s 75-acre campus, with more than 100 species of trees and shrubs, has renewed arboretum status.

Looking Ahead to Future Green Initiatives

Adelphi continues to expand its green roadmap under the guidance of a new Sustainability Committee, launched in Fall 2026.

As part of an overarching $55 million campus modernization project, information technology and facilities management teams are working together on a project to relocate and upgrade the campus data center that will boost operational energy efficiency. The University has also installed new HVAC systems and energy-efficient windows in the Hagedorn Hall of Enterprise.

Looking further ahead, the facilities team is exploring additional solar array installations on the Hy Weinberg Center for Communication Disorders and Angello Alumni House.

With the CRS system energized and delivering clean power, Adelphi proves that even unexpected infrastructure challenges can turn into long-term opportunities for sustainable growth.

Adelphi University’s 26th Annual Gala, A Celebration of Firsts, raised $1.6 million to support Adelphi’s students and their success. Held September 19 at the Garden City Hotel with more than 250 attendees, the evening celebrated first-generation students, welcomed Michael Balboni ’81, JD, as Adelphi’s first alumnus president, and recognized the supporters creating new opportunities across the University.

The evening kicked off in spectacular fashion, celebrating the record-breaking success of the University’s Momentum Campaign: Extraordinary Impact. The monumental initiative didn’t just meet its ambitious $100 million goal—it shattered it a full year early, raising $103 million by its August 31 close. To capture the magnitude of this milestone, a underscored the historic effort behind the campaign and the transformative opportunities this support will unlock for our students.

“Tonight perfectly paired the success of the Momentum Campaign’s close with the immediate impact of the gala,” said Thomas A. Kline, EdD, vice president of advancement and external relations. “We are deeply grateful to every donor, friend, sponsor, and guest who helped make this evening—and its $1.6 million result—possible, ensuring that Adelphi students will always have the support they need to pursue their goals.”

One of the evening’s notable moments came when double alumna Judith Ammerman, MA ’64, MS ’73, committed $500,000 to establish the Judith Ammerman First Generation Endowed Scholarship Fund. A dedicated educator who taught for nearly 30 years at , Ammerman also previously made a $1.5 million planned gift to Adelphi. Offering advice to the first-generation students that her new scholarship will support, Ammerman said, “Being the first in the family has some responsibilities! Get yourself off to a good start, crack open those books, write those papers and do a great job! Remember you have an obligation to set a good example for the rest of your family.”

Also contributing to the evening’s success and Adelphi’s future, Leonard C. Achan ’99, MA, RN, ANP, the chair of Adelphi’s Board of Trustees, committed $250,000 to develop and support specialized programming for first-generation students.

“As a first-generation college student myself, I know how much it matters to have people who see your potential and invest in it,” said Achan, the son of Guyanese immigrants of Indian descent, who commuted from Queens and worked as a Manhattan doorman at night while studying nursing at Adelphi. “The stories we heard at the gala are a reminder that support for one student can reach far beyond one degree, opening endless possibilities for families and communities for generations to come.”

Junior nursing student and Honors College member Liana Esau shared what it means to be the first in her family to attend college. A recipient of the Thomas F. and Christine B. Motamed ’71 Scholarship, Esau spoke about carrying her family’s hopes forward and the role donor support has played in her Adelphi experience. Esau said, “Standing here in a room filled with people who so strongly believe in the power of education makes me think about the wise words of my 93-year-old great-grandmother who said, ‘They can take everything away from you—but not your education.’ Knowing she lived to see me accomplish something she never had the opportunity to is something I hold dearly in my heart.”

Stepping into his new role at the helm of Adelphi University, President Michael Balboni ’81, JD, spoke of his bold vision to redefine higher education as a deeply human partnership built on the University’s greatest foundation: its people.

“I’m grateful for what we have accomplished and excited about what our community will do together next,” said Balboni. “In a world debating the future of higher education, we will never lose our human core. Adelphi students hustle, they lead, and they inspire—and when we support them like family, there is no limit to the impact they will make.”

Adelphi students opened the gala with a dance performance choreographed by Assistant Professor Daniel Padierna. Later in the program, directed by Assistant Professor Robert Jordan, students, faculty and staff performed “For Good” from the musical Wicked and “Seasons of Love” from RENT, written by late Adelphi alumnus Jonathan Larson ’82. Guests also viewed moving testimonials from Adelphi’s .

Adelphi University has added two highly distinguished leaders in the healthcare field to its board of trustees. Even more noteworthy, both leaders share a similar journey—Achan as a first-generation American and Dowling as an immigrant. That shared background gives them a deeply felt empathy for the experiences of so many Adelphi students today.

Leonard C. Achan ’99, a graduate of Adelphi’s nursing program whose connection to the University includes 10 years of service as a trustee and generous support of student scholarships and spiritual life on campus, is a healthcare innovator and executive, philanthropist and artist born in Brooklyn and raised in Queens.

Michael Dowling, who grew up in poverty in Ireland before immigrating to the United States, built Northwell Health into New York state’s largest employer and the Northeast’s largest healthcare provider. As CEO of the nonprofit, based in nearby New Hyde Park, New York, he helped develop longtime alliances with Adelphi that provided critical clinical and educational opportunities for our students.

“Both of these leaders have made an incredible impact on our community,” said Adelphi President Michael Balboni ’81, JD. “Chair Achan’s story truly embodies the Adelphi spirit and is a shining example of our strength in producing leaders in nursing, health care and business. And Michael Dowling shares Adelphi’s deep commitment to the public good. His compassion and dedication to helping others throughout his career are a true reflection of his character.”

Trustee Leonard C. Achan ’99

Chair Achan’s connection to Adelphi is rooted in a deep personal commitment to the University’s mission of transforming lives through education, service and compassionate care. He brings that devotion to his new role as board chair. He succeeds acting chair William Fuessler ’79, who now serves as vice chair.

Like many of his fellow Adelphi nursing alumni, Achan began his career at the bedside, first as a medical ICU nurse and than as an adult acute care nurse practitioner, embodying Adelphi’s core values of care, clinical excellence and service to others. As his leadership expanded into senior executive roles across top-tier institutions—including Mount Sinai Health System, the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and the Hospital for Special Surgery—Chair Achan consistently championed innovation that enhances patient care. As an entrepreneur, he co-founded and served as chairman of Quality Reviews Inc., a digital health platform used by more than 150 hospitals that elevates the care experience for more than 30 million patients nationwide. Today, he is president and CEO of LiveOnNY, a vital nonprofit dedicated to lifesaving organ donations and supporting donor families, further extending the spirit of public health and empathy nurtured during his student days at Adelphi.

Beyond his professional achievements and his leadership as a trustee, Chair Achan has provided transformational philanthropic support for Adelphi and its students. He has championed opportunity by establishing the Leonard Achan Sr. Endowed Scholarship, honoring his father by supporting students passionate about the arts, nature, the environment and public health. He invested in compassionate care by creating the Zosia “Gigi” Levine Endowed Scholarship for Mental Health—honoring his wife’s grandmother, a Holocaust survivor—to provide needed assistance to future generations of mental health counselors. And this past June, his generous gift supporting spiritual life and the inclusive, community-minded mission of Adelphi’s Interfaith Center was recognized by the renaming of the center as the Achan Family Interfaith Center.

“Opening that Adelphi acceptance letter was a spark of light,” Chair Achan said in a . “I was a first-generation American and an inner city youth in Queens. I never thought I might go to college. Adelphi became a beacon that showed me the way to the future I aspired to.”

“Being a trustee has given me such great perspective,” he continued. “I can still reflect back on being a student, so I know our students have dreams too, and I believe they will fulfill those dreams because of their foundation at Adelphi. Through the support of the University, through board governance, through philanthropic support, I have this privilege of helping bring those dreams to life.”

Michael Dowling

A man smiling, wearing glasses and business attire in front of a bookcase

Michael Dowling, who joined the board in September, brings his legacy of global leadership in healthcare, public policy and crisis management to the University.

As president and CEO of Northwell Health for more than 24 years, he provided the visionary leadership that helped Northwell grow into a clinical, academic and research enterprise with more than 106,000 employees and nearly $25 billion in annual revenue.

Prior to Northwell, Dowling served in the New York state government for 12 years, including seven years as state director of health, education and human services and deputy secretary to former Gov. Mario Cuomo, and later as commissioner of the Department of Social Services. A native of County Limerick, Ireland, he earned his undergraduate degree at University College Cork and his Master of Social Work at Fordham University, where he served as a professor of social policy and assistant dean of the university’s Graduate School of Social Service and director of the Fordham campus in Westchester County.

He was named a “Titan” on the TIME100 Health 2025 list and ranked No. 1 on Modern Healthcare’s list of the 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare in 2022. Dowling is the acclaimed author of several books, including his memoir, , a moving account of his hardscrabble upbringing and the educational journey that helped him transcend it.

“I’m extraordinarily proud to join the Adelphi board,” Dowling said. “I look forward to lending my insight and expertise to the University and working with President Balboni and my fellow board members to strengthen Adelphi’s standing as a preeminent institution for healthcare education.”

Dowling and Chair Achan both experienced the power of education to transform lives. As trustees, both have the power to extend Adelphi’s ability to make a life-changing impact on new generations of students while also enhancing the University’s leadership in healthcare.

Dowling, who built into New York’s largest private employer and the Northeast’s largest healthcare provider, brings his legacy of global leadership in healthcare, public policy and crisis management to the University.

Dowling’s appointment reinforces the University’s commitment to aligning its academic programming with the immediate, evolving needs of New York’s healthcare sector.

“Michael Dowling knows firsthand what the modern workforce demands,” noted Adelphi President Michael Balboni ’81, JD. “Our vision is to be Long Island’s preeminent institution for healthcare education, and Michael’s guidance will be invaluable as we graduate the next generation of frontline healthcare workers, administrators and mental health professionals.”

Adelphi has been named a Best College among National Universities for eight consecutive years by U.S. News & World Report, and for the past three years. One of the largest nursing schools in New York state, the Adelphi University College of Nursing and Public Health (CNPH) has steadily risen the national rankings in recent years for both its undergraduate and graduate programs. Adelphi’s CNPH is also the home of its Clinical Education and Simulation Lab (CESiL), the only lab of its kind on Long Island to be accredited by the .

Adelphi’s Powerhouse Governance Team

Dowling joins Adelphi’s highly experienced and respected board of trustees, known for its diverse expertise, deep tenure and civic reputation—adding his global heavyweight status to an already formidable governance team. He joins Leonard C. Achan ’99, a fellow healthcare and business leader and CEO of LiveOnNY, who was recently named chair of Adelphi’s board.

President Balboni’s background in policy and homeland security, paired with the healthcare dominance of Dowling and Achan, positions Adelphi’s board as a coalition of New York’s most experienced, crisis-tested leaders.

“I’m extraordinarily proud to join the Adelphi board,” said Dowling. “The University has a long, proud history of providing students with rewarding career opportunities in healthcare and so many other professions throughout Long Island and the entire metropolitan area. As the longtime CEO at Northwell, where we developed mutually beneficial clinical and educational alliances with Adelphi, I’m well aware of the many talented nurses, public health professionals, administrators, mental health counselors and other graduates who helped fill vital roles within our health system. I look forward to lending my insight and expertise to the University and working with Mike Balboni and my fellow board members to strengthen Adelphi’s standing as a preeminent institution for healthcare education.”

Dowling’s appointment follows the recent addition of four new trustees with diverse insights in law, business, real estate, infrastructure and higher education, and underscores Adelphi’s commitment to utilizing enterprise-level, external leadership to thrive and address the complex challenges of higher education.

Social Impact and Shared Values

Unlike other corporate executives who join university boards, Dowling has a Master of Social Work and began his career as a professor of social policy. While his background mirrors Adelphi’s dedication to community impact, he is also widely recognized for taking a stand on some of the nation’s toughest societal issues—from gun violence prevention and the youth mental health crisis to caring for an aging population.

“As seen in his transformative work, Michael shares Adelphi’s deep commitment to the public good,” President Balboni added. “His compassion and dedication to helping others throughout his career are a true reflection of his character.”

In addition to his healthcare leadership, Dowling brings higher education and corporate governance experience to Adelphi. He served on the board of trustees of Fordham University for eight years and held board appointments with BankUnited, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, the Foreign Policy Association and the Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School at University College Dublin.

Dear Adelphi Community,

I am thrilled to share more exciting news regarding the governance and future of Adelphi University. Healthcare visionary and social impact leader Michael Dowling, CEO Emeritus of Northwell Health, has officially joined our Board of Trustees.

Michael’s remarkable career spans global leadership roles in healthcare, public policy and crisis management. During his more than 24 years as president and CEO, he built Northwell Health into New York’s largest private employer and the Northeast’s largest healthcare provider, renowned for its clinical, academic and research excellence. He knows firsthand what the modern workforce demands, and his guidance will be invaluable as Adelphi continues to educate and graduate the next generation of frontline healthcare workers, administrators, and mental health professionals.

My relationship with Michael dates back many years before his time at Northwell, when he served in the New York state government for 12 years. He played a critical role in ensuring New Yorkers received essential services and support as state director of Health, Education and Human Services and deputy secretary to New York Governor Mario Cuomo, and later as commissioner of the New York State Department of Social Services.

As seen in his transformative work, Michael shares Adelphi’s deep commitment to the public good, higher education and community impact. Holding a Master of Social Work (MSW) from Fordham University, he began his career as a professor at Fordham and served as director of its Tarrytown campus. He later became a professor of social policy and assistant dean at the Graduate School of Social Services, and served on Fordham’s board of trustees for eight years. He has consistently taken a bold stand on important societal issues, including gun violence prevention, pandemic resilience, youth mental health and caring for an aging population.

His compassion and dedication to helping others throughout his career are a true reflection of Michael’s character. From growing up poor as a child in Ireland working on a farm to help support his family, to being an immigrant worker on the docks in Manhattan while in college, Michael embodies the American dream and has a special understanding of the human experience.

Michael joins an already formidable and highly experienced Board of Trustees, including fellow healthcare and business trailblazer Chair Leonard C. Achan ’99 (CEO of LiveOnNY). Together, with the rest of our trustees demonstrating expertise across law, business, real estate, marketing, finance, infrastructure and higher education, our board represents a diverse, experienced coalition of leaders dedicated to guiding Adelphi into its next chapter.

Please join me in extending a warm welcome to Michael Dowling as he joins our university community.

Warm regards,

Michael Balboni ’81, JD
President

Dear Adelphi Community,

I am thrilled to share some exciting news about one of our distinguished alumni who is making an incredible impact in our community. The Adelphi University Board of Trustees appointed Leonard C. Achan ‘99, MA, RN, ANP, as our new board chair following a special meeting in July, taking over from Trustee William Fuessler ’79, who stepped up as acting chair for the past five months.

Chair Achan’s story truly embodies the Adelphi spirit. A proud first-generation American born in Brooklyn and raised in Queens, he began his professional journey right here on our campus, earning his bachelor’s degree in nursing. Like so many of his fellow nursing alumni, Chair Achan started his career at the bedside as a medical ICU nurse and adult acute care nurse practitioner—an experience that deeply informed his compassionate approach to leadership as he became an accomplished healthcare executive and community and business leader.

Today, Chair Achan serves as president and CEO of LiveOnNY. He previously served as the inaugural president of the Innovation Institute at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) after serving as their chief innovation officer. Prior to that, he led major executive initiatives across several roles at the Mount Sinai Health System and served as senior associate dean for global communications, branding, and reputation at the Icahn School of Medicine. As co-founder and chairman of Quality Reviews Inc., he built a digital health platform deployed in more than 150 hospitals, elevating the care experience for more than 30 million patients nationwide.

Throughout his career, Chair Achan’s devotion to Adelphi has never wavered. While serving for more than a decade as a trustee, including five years as a board officer, he has consistently invested back into our campus—returning to lecture, establishing two endowed scholarships, and founding the Achan Family Interfaith Center.

Having worked with him during my time on the board and in our recent conversations, I have seen his razor-sharp mind, energy, and deep passion for our university firsthand. He is a shining example of our strength in producing leaders in nursing, health care and business. I have the utmost confidence that his ambition and commitment to higher education will continue to drive Adelphi forward.

I also want to thank Trustee Fuessler for his steady leadership of the board. His partnership with our senior leaders helped maintain our standard of excellence during an important time of transition at Adelphi. As one of our longest-tenured trustees and someone who has built a family legacy here, it came as no surprise that he approached this responsibility with great care. His ongoing service on the board will continue to benefit our University and serve as a trusted resource for our new chair.

Please join me in celebrating Chair Achan and thanking Trustee Fuessler for their outstanding service to the University.

Warm regards,

Michael Balboni ’81, JD
President

On Thursday, June 11, the Adelphi University Board of Trustees hosted the official ribbon cutting and celebrated the grand opening of the University’s state-of-the-art Manhattan Center. Located in the heart of New York City at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 44th Street, the highly anticipated facility is poised to serve as a critical talent pipeline for the city’s most high-demand industries.

The grand opening event welcomed University leadership, distinguished guests, community partners and Helen Arteaga Landaverde, PhD, New York City’s deputy mayor for health and human services, for an exclusive look inside the modern academic hub, which comprises three floors and more than 51,000 square feet. During the ribbon-cutting festivities, attendees participated in guided tours of high-tech classrooms; STEAM, nursing simulation and computer labs; and student lounges, study spaces and collaborative learning areas.

“Tonight, the future has a new address: 529 Fifth Avenue,” said Adelphi President Michael Balboni ’81, JD. “The new center will prove the value of higher education … . Adelphi is connecting higher education with opportunities.”

Construction on the facility began with a groundbreaking in April 2025. Designed to meet the evolving needs of today’s workforce, the Manhattan Center’s “programs in healthcare, technology, business, human service and education will bring the best of Adelphi to Manhattan,” said Jennifer Lancaster, PhD, executive director of the Manhattan Center and dean of the College of Professional and Continuing Studies. The center has already begun transforming career pathways for its students: The inaugural student cohort began in May 2026 with Adelphi’s accelerated nursing program, designed to address the region’s nursing shortage. STEAM education programs are also underway. The remaining Manhattan Center graduate and professional programs are scheduled to begin in Fall 2026.

As the first Adelphi alumnus and parent—and the first Long Island native—to serve as president of the University, Balboni is intimately familiar with the transformative power of an Adelphi education. He graduated cum laude from the University in 1981 with a degree in biology and is the proud parent of an Adelphi alumna. Throughout his career, he has continually served his alma mater, including as an adjunct faculty member and, most recently, as a distinguished member and chair of the board of trustees.

Balboni emerged from a national search as the leader best positioned to secure public-private partnerships, champion the University regionally and nationally, and drive institutional growth. A defining hallmark of Balboni’s career—from his roles in government to corporate boardrooms—has been his ability to build relationships, work with experts and forge consensus. He steps into the presidency fiercely committed to shared governance, protecting academic freedom and ensuring that the Adelphi campus remains a vibrant, inclusive environment for all students and faculty to thrive in.

In tandem with this announcement, Adelphi’s board named Christopher K. Storm Jr., PhD, who has served as Adelphi’s interim president since last June, to the newly created role of senior executive vice president of academic affairs and provost. This complementary leadership structure allows the provost to focus internally on teaching, research and student outcomes, while President Balboni manages the complex operational and external facets of the University.

“The landscape of higher education is undergoing rapid and profound changes,” said William Fuessler ’79, acting chair of the board of trustees and chair of the University’s Presidential Search Committee. “To thrive, Adelphi requires a president who is a relentless external advocate and a proven executive. Michael possesses the exact blend of operational strength and external advocacy we need.”

“I am thrilled to be returning to my alma mater to lead a community that means so much to me. It truly is a full-circle moment,” said president-elect Balboni. “I have watched how the University has progressed, and I look forward to working with Dr. Storm and the entire community to take Adelphi to new heights as the premier institution of higher learning on Long Island.”

“It has been a tremendous honor to serve as interim president of Adelphi, where I have spent my entire 20-year career,” shared Dr. Storm. “The past year provided me with new opportunities to deepen my connections across campus while maintaining the University’s strong, stable footing before taking our next leap forward. I very much look forward to working with Michael Balboni as we embark on a bold new direction for Adelphi.”

Balboni assumes leadership at a time of remarkable advancement and financial strength for Adelphi. The University boasts a balanced budget, a $282 million endowment and a highly successful $100 million fundraising campaign that is nearing its goal. Underscoring this position of strength, Adelphi has achieved record enrollment in two of the past three years and is launching an ambitious infrastructure initiative to further support student and faculty success.

Adelphi continues to elevate its academic profile. Recognized by Forbes as the premier private university on Long Island, the institution pairs this academic prestige with its reputation as one of the safest campuses in America and an NCAA Division II athletics powerhouse. Looking ahead, the University is actively expanding its regional impact through the new Manhattan Center on Fifth Avenue in New York City, delivering high-demand graduate programs in artificial intelligence, business, nursing, social work, psychology, literature and education to meet the evolving needs of the modern workforce.
