A Master鈥檚 degree in communication disorders: speech-language pathology at Adelphi University will prepare you for a career as a speech-language pathologist, working with clients across the lifespan in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, preschools, early intervention agencies or in school districts. Clinical work focuses on improving speech, voice, language, literacy and feeding/swallowing skills.

At Adelphi, preparing you for certification and licensure is a core commitment of the CSD program. Our curriculum is continuously refined to reflect current best practices in speech-language pathology, and course loads for students are arranged with Praxis preparation prioritized. This is also reflected throughout your academic experience through structured coursework, workshops, topic reviews and individualized advising.
We provide every student with strategic guidance on exam readiness, including time management support and targeted resources, from your first semester through graduation. Because of that guidance, our most recent cohort demonstrated meaningful improvement in Praxis outcomes.

Adelphi University鈥檚 communication sciences and disorders program held a combined Pinning and White Coat Ceremony this year for the first time.
Our SLP students benefit from the opportunity to gain critical hands-on experience at the Hy Weinberg Center for Communication Disorders. You鈥檒l help offer clinical services for the community in the areas of speech, language and hearing disorders, and you鈥檒l be part of innovative group therapy programs for toddlers, preschoolers, adolescents and adults.

Speech-language pathology master鈥檚 students are encouraged to participate in ongoing research projects in one of our seven research labs focused on speech-language pathology and communication disorders.
Assist with providing speech, language, and hearing evaluations and therapy to individuals and groups of all ages and all types of communication disorders at our non-profit Hy Weinberg Center for Communication Disorders.

The prerequisite courses can be completed at Adelphi (in-person) and/or another accredited university (in-person or online).
These courses are primarily offered during the day at Adelphi University, as they are part of our undergraduate program. The advantage of taking at least some prerequisite courses at Adelphi is that you will get to know our faculty and see if we are a good match for graduate school.
To enroll in the prerequisite courses, you must first apply and be accepted as a non-degree student. Upon acceptance, please contact Dr. Susan Lederer, our undergraduate CSD program director, at lederer@adelphi.edu for advisement. Note that some of the courses are only offered once a year at this time. None are offered in the summer.

Speech-language pathology involves the assessment and treatment of people with communication and swallowing disorders. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) diagnose and treat disorders in communication and swallowing in both children and adults. They help people overcome difficulties with speech, language, voice, fluency and swallowing, letting them communicate more effectively and improving their quality of life.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of speech-language pathologists is projected to grow 18 percent from 2023 to 2033, much faster than the average for all occupations.
SLPs work in public and private schools, college and universities, hospitals, medical clinics, rehabilitation centers, and nursing facilities, and provide direct service care in homes or rehabilitation centers. They also can teach and conduct research in universities and provide voice coaching to executives and others in leadership roles.
There is no difference between these terms in the United States. However, individuals are officially certified/licensed as 鈥渟peech-language pathologists鈥� by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and many state licensing boards.
A master鈥檚 degree from an accredited program in speech-language pathology, such as Adelphi鈥檚 MS in Communication Disorders: Speech-Language Pathology, is required to practice as an SLP.
Adelphi鈥檚 graduate program in SLP prepares you for national certification, New York state licensure and New York state certifications, such as the Teacher of Students With Speech and Language Disabilities (TSSLD). You also have the option to complete the bilingual extension to the TSSLD during the program.
To become an SLP, individuals complete Adelphi鈥檚 graduate program in SLP in five semesters, followed by a minimum of 36 weeks of supervised clinical practice. Individuals should consult ASHA and state licensing boards for more details.
